An electric bus is less a different vehicle than a different depot. To a passenger the day looks the same — same routes, same stops, same timetable. The change sits behind that, in how the fleet is fuelled and maintained.
Buses charge at the depot, mostly overnight when demand on the grid is low. A vehicle leaves in the morning with the range it needs for its assigned route; where a route runs longer than a single charge, the schedule puts the bus back on a charger during a layover rather than sending it out short. Range, route length and layover time are planned together, which is why fleet sizing is worked out route by route rather than as one number.
There is no fuel to buy, no engine oil to change and far less to wear out: no gearbox, no clutch, no exhaust line. Braking recovers energy into the battery instead of into brake pads. What remains is largely tyres, suspension, doors, air conditioning, and the battery itself — monitored continuously and the one component with a scheduled end of life.
So the operating case rests on two numbers. Cost per kilometre, which is lower and steadier than diesel because electricity prices move less than fuel prices. And availability — how many buses are on the road when the timetable says they should be.
